Some students of the Islamic Senior High School at Abrepo in the Ashanti Region were rushed to the hospital after police allegedly opened tear gas on them.
In an attempt to dispel the demonstrating students who had blocked the road leading to their school in protest of frequent accidents, and their unheeded calls to have a speed rump constructed to curb this menace, the police opened tear gas.
This has left about 30 students injured: some were unconscious, while others writhed in pain.
The affected students have been transported to the nearest hospital in ambulances with intensified security.
Meanwhile, some parents are trooping into the school following the incident.
A parent said, “I heard there is a scuffle in the school and the police attacked the students, shooting and beating them. I heard the police chased them even into their dormitories and were beating the girls. I feel very bad seeing school children on the floor unconscious. Everybody is messed up here.”
