President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has stated that it is time Member States of ECOWAS take a critical look at the effectiveness of their electoral systems and processes that will provide free and fair elections and guarantee accountable governance.
According to him, the running of credible elections poses, a big challenge to many democracies including West Africa. He made this call at the opening ceremony of the Fifth High-Level Parliamentary Seminar, themed; Two decades of Democratic Elections in the ECOWAS Member States: Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward.
He explained that the direct participation of the people in the election of leaders and the maintenance and operation of the natural systems that capture, the genuine will of the people must be key However, President Akufo Addo noted that the profession of the sanctity of The Ballot Box carries with it, the subversion of good governance, hence must be the solution.
In the same vain he lamented that over the last 20 years, the world has come to acknowledge that elections in west Africa have been largely free, fair, and credible,outcomes of generally being well, acclaimed, and accepted.
Therefore, It is vital, they maintain this reputation and do not allow any manipulation of the Electoral systems to achieve quote, favorable outcomes.
