The Odaw drainage which flows from taifa to Achimota through to circle was constructed under former president John Agyekum Kuffour’s administration which indicates that it has been in existence for more than a decade now.
The reason for the construction of the Odawna drainage is to avert sporadic flooding when there is a heavy downpour in some parts of Accra. The Achimota drainage which is a confluence to the Odaw is on a rough edge as residents through illicit dumping of all forms of waste have obstructed the main purpose of the drainage; to ease waste management and reduce perennial flooding in some parts of Accra.
Due to the state of the drainage being fissure, and a refuse dump for some people, some residents of Achimota in an interview with Adoa News expressed their worry about the state of the drainage and the fear it has put in them especially whenever there is rainfall. Angela, a resident of Achimota closer to the drainage claims, she is worried about the poor nature of the system because whenever it rains, there is only one thing in mind; flood.
“Because of the refuse, our rooms get flooded whenever there’s a heavy downpour same as our church since it is also closer to the drainage”.
Enyonam a resident, also levelled the nature of the drainage system to human activities despite their actions to stop them.
“The refuse is distracting us seriously to the extent that we quickly fall sick due to mosquitoes and house flies, what hurts most is that we can’t figure the people behind this act. “.
Speaking to the news team, the unit committee Chairman of the area, Isaac Yeboah Adjei said, they have tried their possible best to reach authorities in fixing the drainage but all efforts proved futile, so they are planning to stage a three-day demonstration with the youth for immediate action to be carried out.
This means that they have tried all their possible best for the drainage to be fixed but to no avail from the MP’s.
