BY: Joyce Andzie

The introduction of the mobile money service has really contributed to the development of the country.

It has made sending and receiving money easier and faster, however, fraudsters have taken advantage of the highly positive technological service to steal from people. The problem is a colossal challenge facing the telecommunications industry, however, telecommunication giant MTN implemented a policy of using ID cards during mobile money transactions process.

During the implementation of the policy, it was indicated that, the ID card a user is to provide during transaction should be the same ID card used in registering the mobile money account and must also bear the user’s name, picture and validation number to get rid of the illegal practices of fraudsters.

This initiative commenced on April 1, 2021 and has far achieved it’s purpose positively.

Engaging some mobile money vendors in Accra to elicit their views on the “No ID No Transaction” initiated by MTN, they said; they are happy with the policy because ever since they started implementing the initiative because it has reduced the rate of swindling activities in the country coupled with built-up confidence in using mobile money.

However, others are of the view that, the initiative should be reviewed since one could use another person’s ID to withdraw money which goes contrary to the main reason for the introduction of the initiative.
