You cannot regularize baseless allowances – TUC

BY: Jacqueline Quaye

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), has spurned the Ntiamoa-Baidu led Committee’s recommendation for spouses of l Presidents and Vice – Presidents to receive monthly wages.
The workers’ union has asserted that the spouses of the president and vice president are not specified under article 71 of the constitution of Ghana, therefore, it is not right for anyone who has not been officially assigned duties and responsibilities in the public service to receive monthly salaries.

In a press statement signed and issued by the Secretary-General of TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah said,
“The Trades Union Congress will not support payment of salaries to the spouses of presidents and Vice President even if the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee’s recommended payment of such salaries”.

In the said statement, the committee sought to regularize the payment of allowances that were being paid already. But you cannot regularize the payment of allowances which has no legal basis, the statement read.

He stressed that Ghanaians appreciate what the first and second ladies are doing to support women’s rights and other noble initiatives towards the social development of the country but, neither the constitution of Ghana nor the laws of the land assigns them any official duties and responsibilities.

Hitherto to that, Dr. Baah advised President Akufo-Addo to initiate a process towards the establishment of a committee made up of experts from various fields to advise the Government on salaries for all jobholders in the entire public service to ensure fairness. He further stated that the current system appears to favor politicians at the expense of other jobholders in the larger public service in terms of salaries, allowances, and other job-related privileges.

“The wrong that has been perpetuated over nearly past three decades at the blind side of taxpayers must stop he stressed.”
