Hearts of Oak end 12years trophy drought

Accra Hearts of Oak have been crowned the champions of the 2020/21 Ghana premier league for the first time in 12 years.

The phobians secured their elusive 21st title following their 1-1 draw with regional rivals Liberty Professionals on Sunday afternoon at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kwame Paul 87th minute strike for the Scientific Soccer lads canceled out Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s first-half strike for Hearts of Oak.

By virtue of the 1-1 draw, the rainbow club wins the league with 61 points, 4points ahead of second-place Asante Kotoko who lost at the Nana Gyeabour Park to Bechem United by 2-1. The Phobians are champions of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League with a game left to be played. The Phobians will get GH¢250,000 for their effort.

The new cash prize package is an increment of the GH¢180,000 Aduana Stars received for winning the last league title in the 2016/17 campaign.

This comes after the Ghana Football Association promised to reward the winner of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) a cash prize of ¢250,000 plus a league trophy. Hearts of Oak in addition will get 40 gold medals, 10,000 worth of groceries from Melcom Shopping Center.

As the first football club to win the domestic league in its maiden edition in 1956, Hearts of Oak have won its 21st league title after 12 years.
