Arresting, Prosecuting Twitter Offenders Is Not Our Job

The Nigerian Communications Commission has asserted that it is not within their job line to arrest and prosecute violators of Twitter Ban Order.

Last Saturday 5th June 2021, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami directed a command to the Director of Public Prosecution to liaise with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, the NCC included and other relevant government agencies “to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay”.

However, when NCC was contacted on Monday 7th June to answer on how far their collaboration with the DPP to prosecute offenders, the Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde stated “ It is not within the Power of the commission to arrest or prosecute.

He added, The NCC is a regulator, It is not within our power to arrest or prosecute. We limited ourselves to help based on the order the government gave us and it was to instruct the app operators to disconnect and we did it.
So the other aspect including arresting and prosecuting is not in our work line, Adinde stated
