The Ghana Football Association (GFA), announced a fortnight ago that it has begun the process of implementing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), technology in domestic competitions.
“The introduction of VAR is something that really excites us as referees;during the local derbies especially when Hearts face Kotoko, there is so much pressure in these games that the least mistake can’t be tolerated.”
‘I must admit we are humans and mistakes are inevitable but with the video assistance 90% of those errors can be corrected’
The video assistant referee, is an assistant referee in association football who intervenes in decisions made by the referee and requests for an on field review with the use of video footage and headset for communication.
VAR was first written into the laws of the game by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2018, following extensive trailing in a number of major competitions.
Invention of VAR by University of Ghana Students
During the 2020 GUSA games the highlight of the tournament was the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee.
The locally invented VAR was used by the University of Ghana Legon Computing Systems (UGCS) and the Multi-Media Team covering the GUSA games. The VAR was used during the football game between UG and UMAT at the GUSA 2020 games. The team had 5 cameras, plus a drone for the coverage .
Perhaps this move by the students was far reaching as it aided the referees in making decisions and having the opportunity to review some uncertain as well.
