Most individuals and organisations are calling on government to implement its promises in the areas of guidance and counselling in schools as it is crucial especially in times of covid-19.
Notwithstanding, an educationist and counsellor, Mr. Daniel Fenyi in a conversation recounted that, the issue of guidance and counselling is not given the necessary attention in the basic education system and is, therefore, calling on the ministry of education to treat it as a matter of urgency.
As they say, to achieve the objective of education, the wellbeing and economic development of a country, it is very crucial to strengthen all levels of the country’s education system.
Speaking to Mr Feni on the importance of Guidance and counselling, an area in our education system which has received little or no attention over the past years, he disclosed that the guidance and counselling coordinating unit should sit students down and give them some sort of counselling as most students have little knowledge about it.
According to Counsellor Fenyi, most students choose some courses and schools because they have friends in that particular school pursuing the same course.
He appealed to the National Curriculum restructuring bodies and the ministry of education to develop a general course which will aid students achieve an all-round background in the various courses pursued at the senior high level.
