At a short ceremony in Accra yesterday, Mr Charles Gyamfi received Ghs 536,000 cash prize. The presentation was made on behalf of the government by the Hon. Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
On December 6, 2019, in Ho, Volta Region, Charles Gyamfi from the Ahafo Region has adjudged the 2019 National Best Farmer. The winner from the Tano North District has been farming for the past 25 years, producing various tree crops, cassava, maize and vegetables among others.
Mr Gyamfi produces fruit juices with produce from his farm and the cassava for gari.
The award winner also rears cattle, goats and poultry. He owns beehives, fish ponds and farms employs over a hundred youth in his community.
In Mr Gyamfi’s proposal on how he will utilise the money, he indicated that part of the money will be used to expand his existing farm, the part will be used to acquire and install irrigation facilities in the light of erratic rainfall conditions.
In presenting the prize to Mr Charles, The Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto expressed satisfaction about the utilization plan saying the money is being allocated in a way that will bring about an expansion of the business of the award winner. He said the benefits from the money will not go to the farmer alone and his immediate family but to the community, the farmer operates from.
He commended Agriculture Development Bank and urged the bank to exists for farmers and not traders and as such 100℅ of its operations should reflect the value chine of agriculture.
