Hundreds of members of the St. Stephen Catholic Church at Darkuman, have come together to rid the entire community of filth as the Church embarked on a cleanup exercise to keep Ghana clean.
The exercise saw both young and old in the church join hands to desilt choked gutters, clear weeds and evacuate refuse within the Darkuman and Fadama community.
The clean-up exercise took place at exactly 6: 00 am from Darkuman township to fadama where the gutters are seen.
Parish Priest of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Darkuman Reverend Father Bonaventure Quaidoo stated that the church had made it a responsibility to educate members on the need to adopt good sanitary conditions.
He said the mandate of the church is not to only preach about God, but to also encourage environmental safety.
He hinted of the Church’s intention to provide dustbins in the community to reduce indiscriminate loitering.
The exercise forms part of the church’s contribution to complimenting government efforts towards improving sanitation.

He indicated that it was relevant for the public to live in a healthy environment, saying the word of God charged mankind not to pollute nor defile the land, hence the need to live in holy and healthy surroundings.
Charlotte Theresa Darko, President of St. Theresa of the child Jesus society, also said it is time for all Ghanaians to get involved in the waste management process by managing waste in their homes using waste bins before it spilt out onto the streets and gutters.
