Government has announced an increment in cocoa producer price by 8.43% for the next cocoa crop season.
The minister of state in charge of Food and Agricultural, Dr. Nurah Gyiela disclosed this in Sunyani of the Bono Region at the climax of the National Cocoa Day Celebration.
According to the Minister, a bag of Cocoa would be sold for GHC515, while a tonne would go for GHC8,249.
Before the commencement of a crop season, mostly in October every year, Cocobod announces a farmgate price it will pay to farmers for their cocoa in the crop season.
The price was last increased by 11.76 % in October 2016 to cover the 2016/2017 season. Since then, it has remained unchanged at GHC 7,600 per tonne, GHC 475 per bag.
The Chief Executive Officer for Cocobod, Hon. Joseph Boahen Aidoo in his speech called on farmers to assist cocoabod by accepting governments interventions such as pruning, rehabilitation, irrigation, hand pollination and fertilizer application in their cocoa farms.
However, Chairman for the occasion, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah I, Paramount of Goaso Traditional Area entreated farmers to adopt new farming methods in order to improve their cocoa productions.
He appealed to government through Cocoa Board to complete all Cocoa Roads in the Country for easy access.
